Email #3

Introduction to Wireless Communication

Hello!

The workshop is about a week away, and excitement is at its peak!

This third (and last) preparation email is about Wireless Communication and  introduction to Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

Some Terminology:

  • Here are some basics concepts in Wireless Communication that I would like you to know, just scan through the links, and get some basic understanding and familiarity with them. (Don’t worry if you don’t understand everything, we will go over the important topics together. The Hebrew version of Wikipedia are not bad as well).

  • In our workshop we will learn about BLE. here is a  great short introduction video (less than 5 minutes):

Hello BLE :-)

A fun exercise for you!

Overview:

In this exercise, you will take a look at the BLE devices around you, using the nRF-Connect application, and gather some basic information about them. The exercise shall take you about 5-10 minutes.

Task Goal:

To have a first, and basic, hands-on experience of working with Bluetooth Low Energy devices.

Installation:

Please install Nordic Semiconductors Mobile Application (Andriod / iOS). The nRF-Connect Mobile Application is a great tool to work with and debug BLE devices.

Code:

No code is needed.

You will need the nRF-Connect Mobile Application (see installation part above).

Instructions:

  • First, enable Bluetooth on your mobile phone. In some versions of Android, it is also required to enable the location (GPS).

  • Open your nRF App, and take a look around (If you don't see any devices you need to press the "SCAN" button that is located at the upper-right of the screen) . You shall see the Bluetooth devices around you. The devices transmit some basic information, it is called “Advertising”.
    What information can you find?

  • If you swipe right, you can see how strong the devices transmit. The Green is my Polar A300. What has happened in the last picture?
Can you find a Bluetooth device near you? Try to move your mobile phone towards it and check the RSSI.

  • Lets connect to it! Swipe left and press “connect” to the device. When we are connected in a link to the device, we can get information form it. What is this 0x1800?

Installations:

In this link you can find the installation you will need for our workshop.

Woman of the Day

The only women I know as a roll-model for wireless communication is Hedy Lamarr.  Do you know a fabulous woman in this field? Let me know!

The good news is that we can get to know some more awesome women who also love SETM.  (picture is taken from here, and here is a Hebrew version for this slide).

Please feel free to contact me for any question.

See you soon!

Dafna.
